What to Do and When for Enrolling in Medicare

When you become eligible for Medicare, there are important things to consider and steps to take at certain times. Our timeline here provides suggestions for how to stay on track. If you plan to work past 65, explore your options.

  • Age 64

Now’s the time to get ready for Medicare, so be sure to learn about Medicare and the different types of plans. It’s also important to know how your current coverage might change when you turn 65. If you currently have health coverage through an employer, ask if they offer coverage options for people 65 and older. Get tips for your specific situation.

Be sure to go through your recent health care history. Make a list of your regular doctors and prescription drugs.

    Ask yourself these questions:

    • What did you pay in the past year (including premiums, deductibles, co-pays, and co-insurance)?
    • How many times did you go to the doctor?
    • How many times did you stay in the hospital?
    • Do you plan on traveling?

Don’t get stuck paying penalties. You must be enrolled in Medicare parts A, B, and D (or creditable coverage) by now to avoid paying late enrollment penalties.

You have the option to change Medicare plans once a year during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). This period is October 15 through December 7.
